Stefanie Auer

 

 

Stefanie Auer, Ph.D is scientific director of the M.A.S Alzheimerhilfe Austria, a non profit organization founded in 1997. From 1991 to 1999, she worked as research professor at the New York University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Auer has developed and published psychological test measures for persons with dementia. She is currently directing research Grants to advance the knowledge regarding therapeutic care models for persons with dementia and their caregivers. Since 2002 she and her team has developed a unique research environment for non pharmacological studies in a rural environment establishing 6 Dementia service Centres throughout the region of Upper Austria. This initiative enables families to take advantage of regular support and treatment services. Persons with dementia themselves have the opportunity within this project to visit stage specific training groups on a regular basis. Caregivers receive support, training and counselling. This project’s aim is to collect long term research data to measure the effect of nonpharmacological interventions on the course of Alzheimer’s disease. The project has been financed by the County of Upper Austria and several research grants. In 2009 Dr. Auer has initiated a University course for “Dementia Studies” at the Danube University Krems (Austria) within the Department of Neurorehabilitation. This is a postgraduate master course promoting improved practice and research in the field.
